| With BTS set to return as a complete group for the first time in about four years, their comeback concert is scheduled to take place in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on the 21st, and the entire city of Seoul is expected to be bathed in the red light that is BTS’s new theme. On the 16th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it has prepared a variety of welcoming programs in collaboration with HYBE for the global fans, “ARMY,” visiting Seoul for the concert. The most eye-catching feature is the change in landscape lighting at major Seoul landmarks. For two hours starting at 7:30 PM on the comeback day, the 20th, and the concert day, the 21st, 15 of Seoul’s landmarks—including Sebitseom, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul Botanic Garden, Namsan N Seoul Tower, and Lotte World Tower—will simultaneously light up in red. Combining LED lighting, music, and a fountain over 1 kilometer long, the event is expected to provide a spectacular sight for citizens and tourists at Banpo Hangang Park. From the 6th to the 19th of next month, a 500-meter section of Cheonggyecheon Stream between Ogansugyo Bridge and Beodeuldari Bridge will be decorated as the ‘Arirang Lightwalk’ ( BTS THE CITY ARIRANG SEOUL Cheonggyecheon Walking Path), featuring symbols of BTS, promising to offer fans a special walking experience. A ‘K-pop Walking Tour Course’ will also be established, connecting BTS music video filming locations with the HYVE (agency) headquarters. It will operate with three courses: ‘Comfort of the Han River,’ ‘Song of Cheonggye,’ and ‘Arirang of the Plaza.’ Guided tours accompanied by cultural tourism commentators will also be held twice a day, at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Reservations can be made on the Walking Tour Guide website. Regarding the reason for choosing red instead of purple, a Seoul city official explained, “Since the color of their new album ‘Arirang’ is red, we decided to use red lighting (at the request of the organizer, HYBE),” adding, “It will look as if the entire city has become a giant concert stage.” Special events will continue not only at the lighting venues but also along the Han River and throughout the city center. |

| The Guggenheim in New York City is one of the most famous art museums in the world, and on the morning of Wednesday (March 25), BTS descended on the landmark to add a little performance art to its galleries ahead of the band’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon appearance. Billboard was on the scene as RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook sang and danced to two tracks from their new album, ARIRANG, which dropped earlier in March. One of them was “SWIM,” the project’s lead single, while the other was “2.0.” | There were about 150 fans invited to the top-secret performance, and no phones were allowed. The septet performed the two tracks in the Guggenheim’s striking multi-story round in the main lobby — and while RM was able to dance for “SWIM,” he sat on a stool during “2.0” as he recovers from the ankle injury he suffered shortly prior to BTS’ March 21 comeback show in Seoul. As previously announced, the Bangtan Boys will appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night for their first full-group late-night interview since reuniting. One of BTS’ Guggenheim performances from Wednesday morning will air during the episode, while the second will be shown to Fallon viewers on Thursday (March 26) | The Guggenheim showcase and Fallon interview come as BTS has been promoting ARIRANG — the group’s first full-length since 2020’s Billboard 200-topper Be — in New York City. | For @bts.bighitofficial’s Tonight Show takeover appearance, the group did a “fan surprise” with Jimmy. A few very select fans were invited to be part of an experience. The ruse was that they were told that they were going to sing karaoke along to BTS songs from the new album, ARIRANG. They entered a special booth that the show constructed in a studio, which featured a microphone, headphones, and a screen showing the song lyrics. The booth was decorated with BTS albums as well. As the music started and the fans sang along, there was another set piece of a completely different room in the studio that was moved into place, so that the singing booth’s door would now open into this new room. As the participants sang along to the tracks, BTS and Jimmy were just outside, watching on a monitor. This photo is a still of the group enjoying the karaoke. I love that you can see everyone smiling and enjoying the performances. During the singalong, BTS and Jimmy entered the new room to surprise the guests. I invited a friend who loves BTS to be part of this experience. She was in the very last group shown in the full bit. She’s a legend now. I had only told her that she’d be singing karaoke, so she was completely surprised when she opened the door to see BTS and Jimmy playing Twister in an entirely new room. RM even tried to comfort her in her shock, it was very touching and sweet to see the members care for their fans like that. |

The supergroup’s comeback album Arirang, their first full-length LP in six years, brought in record-breaking first week sales. Arirang sold 641,000 total copies in its first week of release — the most by a group since Billboard started tracking streaming numbers in 2014 — including 532,000 in pure album sales. That latter figure is the biggest by a group in over a decade, Billboard reports; it’s the most pure album sales by a group since One Direction’s Midnight Memories in 2013. Within 24 hours of arrival, Arirang racked up the most single-day streams for an album released this year on Spotify. BTS also brought in their all-time biggest streaming day on Apple Music. The numbers show that the record was worth the wait. BTS spent the past few years on hiatus as RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook completed their mandatory military service in South Korea and explored solo projects. “During the time away, ironically, the world got to know these seven men better than ever as individuals. They all got to display sides they’d never gotten to show in public before,” Rob Sheffield wrote in Rolling Stone‘s review of Arirang. “All seven spent the interregnum learning how to go somewhere new on their own. But now, they finally get to take everything they learned, everything they explored, and bring it all back to the group where it began. That’s the power of Arirang — seven different voices, but united again and stronger than ever.” The 14-track album brought BTS together with an inspired slate of collaborators, from Ryan Tedder and Tyler Johnson to Teezo Touchdown, JPEGMafia, Flume, Diplo, Mike Will Made-It, and more. In a new documentary, the band revealed that Jin is absent from the songwriting credits on the record because of prior tour obligations that kept him from the bulk of their writing sessions. “They made a really nice album while I was on tour,” he said. “Coming in late and not really knowing where everyone’s at is scary, because I have to figure out where I fit into all of this. But having spent the last 12 years together, I’ve kind of known what to do without being told.” They all share the victory of their return. |

Are you a fan of the band @bts.bighitofficial? You may have seen a teaser video last month for the band’s new album, “Arirang,” which shares its name with a beloved Korean folk song. The video alluded to the first recording ever made of that song, which is on a nearly 130-year-old wax cylinder preserved here at the Library of Congress.
The American Folklife Center has what is likely the largest collection of ethnographic cylinder recordings in the world, and it is cared for by the Library’s National Audio Visual Conservation Center. Part of that care is state-of-the-art digitization, as seen in this video.
