In 2007 while still in high school he spent a year as a foreign exchange student in Australia. Jin had dreamed of being an actor and attended Konkuk University. It was while he was at university that he was spotted by a Big Hit employee as he was getting on a bus and he was encouraged to audition. He had no training in dance or singing so he did not plan to become an IDOL. Nevertheless, he auditioned and was successful as the company thought that he fit the right image that they were looking for. Jin joined the agency in 2011 – he was the fourth member to join and he has said how he joined /signed the contract a couple of days before Jungkook he, however, did not move into the dorm until 2012. Jin is the eldest of the group but he is often called the ‘real Maknae’ for his ability to uplift the teams spirits.
“Never forget to cherish yourself and always remember that you are a sparkling gem. Always remember to sparkle with confidence just like me!”
— Kim Seokjin

Early Life & Career Aspirations
- Born: December 4, 1992, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.
- Initially dreamed of becoming an actor, inspired by watching films and dramas — particularly the works of Korean actors like Kim Nam-gil.
- Studied acting at Konkuk University, majoring in Film Studies, before training in music.
- Had no formal vocal or dance training prior to joining BigHit Entertainment, making his musical development especially rapid.
Scouted by Big Hit Entertainment
- 2009: At 17, Jin was first street-casted by SM Entertainment for his visuals, but he declined the audition because he thought it was a scam.
- 2010: Spotted again by a BigHit casting director while walking down the street; this time, accepted the offer — initially auditioned as an actor, not as an idol trainee.
- BigHit trained him in singing and dancing from scratch, identifying his strong stage presence and potential as a “visual member.”
Training Period
- Joined BigHit as an acting trainee and transitioned into full idol training after the company decided to debut him in BTS.
- Trained for approximately 3 years (2010–2013) alongside future BTS members.
- Focused heavily on:
- Vocal basics — breath control, tone stability, harmonization.
- Dance training — particularly challenging for him at first, but gradually improved through rigorous daily practice.
- Known among trainees for his dedication and politeness, often arriving early for practice.
Pre-Debut Appearances
- Appeared in early BTS pre-debut content on BigHit’s YouTube channel, such as:
- “Bangtan Bomb” trainee practice clips.

- Had a small cameo in BTS’s pre-debut music teaser videos — particularly standing out in the first “No More Dream” concept reveal.

- Acting background gave him strong facial expressions and charisma on camera — skills that became a major asset during music videos and live stages.
Transition to Debut
- By early 2013, Jin had:
- Built enough vocal confidence to record lines for “No More Dream” and “We Are Bulletproof Pt.2.”
- Improved his dancing to meet BTS’s intense choreography demands.
- Fully embraced his role as BTS’s Visual and eldest member, taking on quiet leadership responsibilities in practice rooms.
“Even when I fall and hurt myself I still endlessly run towards my dream.”

Jin quickly became known for his amazing voice and was given the name ‘Silver voice’ He was regarded as being the face/visual of BTS and after the 2017 Billboard awards he became unofficially known as “third one from the left.” It has been widely acknowledged by himself that dancing is not something that he was trained in so he initially found it difficult. He would often start learning the dances earlier than the other members. That being said he has shown that he is more than able dancer and has been able to keep up with all the difficult choreography and even danced after he had surgery in 2022. His strong work ethic has enabled him to achieve many solo successes. His willingness to embrace even tasks that he finds difficult has contributed to his and the group’s success.

- In choreography, Jin initially had fewer central formations due to his shorter dance training, but steadily improved — debut stages already showed his commitment to sharp synchronization.
- Known for his “shoulder width” joke — fans noticed and playfully exaggerated his broad shoulders even in early fan interactions.
